About Our Sixth Form Centre
Dear Student / Parent / Carer.
Welcome to the Sixth Form area of the The Castle School website.
The Castle School Sixth Form is a thriving and successful centre for post-16 education. We have a well-deserved reputation for significant and sustained academic and vocational success in a caring, supportive environment.
Our Sixth Form of 400 students, many of whom join us from other schools, is based on a separate, dedicated Sixth Form site. This helps mark the clear transition from GCSE study into more challenging, independent learning and greater freedom of choice. However, the Sixth Form remains very much at the heart of the Castle School and we share a common ethos and approach.
From day one, students enjoy the welcoming and lively atmosphere, where high standards of conduct, leaning and achievement are the norm. We believe that young people have a right to a safe, happy, varied and challenging learning experience where every individual student matters and all young people have abilities which must be realised.
The academic standards achieved by our students in external examinations are very high and represent a tradition of which we are very proud. The emphasis placed on learning, both as an independent individual and as a member of a group, continues to be a strong feature throughout post-16 study. So too does the emphasis on developing the personal qualities of resilience, self-responsibility and integrity.
We believe that academic success is just one aspect of life in the Sixth Form. Our unique extended curriculum offers an enormous range of opportunities for students to develop their individual talents and interests both inside and outside the classroom. The world is a rapidly changing place and our sixth formers emerge as confident, skilled young adults, well-equipped for the challenges they will meet now and in the future.
All students within our Sixth Form will be following an agreed Study Programme, which will be appropriate to their existing qualifications and their aspirations.
For students who have already obtained a minimum of 5 GCSEs at A* - C or equivalent, the Study Programme will include a combination of Level 3 courses – A-Levels, BTECs or equivalents. For students working at Level 2, the Study Programme will include a predetermined set of subjects on the Advanced Bridging course. Maths and English GCSE classes will automatically be part of the Study Programme for any student who hasn’t yet obtained a C grade or equivalent in either, and are available to others also.
All students, whichever academic route they follow, will have tutorial support and Life Skills included within the Study Programme. This will include guidance on progression routes, as well as guidance on all 6 areas of the CASTLE Life Skills Programme.
An extended work placement will form part of the Study Programme for all students on the Advanced Bridging Programme, and may be included for some students on Level 3 courses.
An Extension Curriculum Programme will also run each year, and a majority of students will usually include at least one part of this within their Study Programme.
Our prospectus will provide you with an overview of our Sixth Form. Please do not hesitate to contact the Sixth Form if you have any questions left unanswered.
